Luke 20:41-44
Whose Son Is the Christ?
[41] But he [Jesus] said to them, “How can they say that the Christ is David's son? [42] For David himself says in the Book of Psalms,
“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
[43] until I make your enemies your footstool.”’
[44] David thus calls him Lord, so how is he his son?” (ESV)
Background:
Jesus goes on from the issues of tax and resurrection to ask a contradictory question - over how the Christ is both David's descendant yet Lord.
But I think that's the beauty of it all, isn't it? That God looks not at heritage, or age, or language, or race, or culture, nationality... God values, appoints, and saves each person individually. There are 2 wondrous conclusions to this.
1. Our eternity is not determined by the failures of our parents
Just because our parents weren't good parents, just because they could never hold a job, or could never stay out of prison, or never escaped a particular sin - this doesn't disqualify us from salvation in Jesus. Just as how Jesus being a descendant of David does not exclude Him from being David's Lord, we cannot allow the failures of the old to define our present and future.
2. Our eternity is not determined by the successes of our parents
The complete opposite to the above - Having David as Jesus' ancestor doesn't make Jesus the rightful King of Israel, for that would not give Jesus sufficient authority to sit at the right hand of God. In the same way, being children of wonderful Christian parents, of pastors and missionaries, of martyrs and saints does not make us Christian. God judges us individually and we must make our individual choice to obey Him.
Father,
I thank you that my eternity is not defined by the choices of my ancestors. I thank you that my worth is not found in my own choices in my own pasts, in fact, but instead found in You and Your work, Your unchanging, perfect work. I pray that you will help me daily choose to follow you, even when situations in life become stressful and difficult, as they have been over the past few days. Lord, you alone deserve Lordship of my life, I pray you claim it and keep me from claiming it for myself
